OnePlus Buds Pro 2 Review

OnePlus Buds Pro 2

OnePlus Buds Pro 2 are a pair of premium wireless earbuds that don’t skimp on features or build quality. With their dual-driver design and effective noise-cancelling, they’re a great choice for anyone who wants to get a pair of true wireless buds without breaking the bank.

OnePlus worked with Danish audio company Dynaudio to develop these earbuds, and they feature a dual-driver design that’s supposed to offer fuller sound and support Spatial Audio.

Noise Cancellation

OnePlus worked with audio specialist Dynaudio to build the Buds Pro 2. It uses dual drivers, one is an 11mm bass driver and the other is a 6mm for elevating higher frequencies.

The result is a big, powerful bass with controlled treble response that reproduces music well, but doesn’t sacrifice clarity or sound quality. Songs like Periphery’s Prayer Position and Don Broco’s Endorphins were reproduced without losing the crispness or control of the higher notes.

OnePlus claims the earbuds can tune out 48dB of outside noise, and this sounds pretty impressive. But as with any ANC system, it’s not perfect, and the noise cancelling does seem to amplify high-frequency sounds, which can be annoying.

Battery Life

The OnePlus Buds Pro 2 is a solid pair of true wireless earbuds. They offer excellent battery life, dual drivers, and some cool app-based features.

The buds are paired with a 520mAh case, which supposedly delivers 25 hours of playback with ANC enabled and 39 hours without it. However, actual performance will vary based on your use.

The earbuds have touch controls on the stems that allow you to control playback, adjust volume and interact with Google Assistant. These touch controls are sensitive and haptic, making them easier to locate than traditional taps on the body of the earbuds.

Design

The OnePlus Buds Pro 2 are well-designed true wireless buds that are comfortable to wear. They’re also easy to pair with and connect to a variety of devices.

They feature Bluetooth 5.3 with Fast Pair for Android, plus support for AAC, LC3, and LHDC audio standards. They have a sleek design and come in a pair of matching cases, in both Obsidian Black and Arbor Green colors.

They’re one of the first earbuds to support Google’s spatial audio implementation and head tracking, which aims to make your audio experience more immersive. These features require a OnePlus phone, however, and won’t work on other smartphones.

Audio Quality

OnePlus’ Buds Pro 2 are an excellent pair of wireless earbuds that sound a lot better than their predecessor. They’re based on MelodyBoost dual drivers co-created with Dynaudio, which deliver a deep, rich sound with crisp treble and plenty of bass.

Besides the new drivers, the company also included an upgraded LHDC 4.0 codec that can stream Hi-Res audio at up to 1Mbps, and support for AAC audio (along with LE Audio). Lastly, they feature a spatial audio mode designed by Hollywood music producer Hans Zimmer, who’s orchestrated music for movies like The Lion King, Interstellar and Dune.

The HeyMelody companion app offers a few sound customization options, including one that tests your hearing and automatically builds an EQ curve to fit your ears. The app also offers a mode that lets you customize active noise cancellation, and Zen Mode Air, which can play a relaxing ambient track.

Conclusions

The OnePlus Buds Pro 2 are a smart pair of buds packed with features, fit comfortably and sound superb for their price. They undercut the Apple AirPods Pro and we can recommend them to anyone who wants a pair of wireless buds that pack a lot into their price tag.

They feature all the usual smarts, including Google Fast Pair for quickly pairing with Android devices, multi-device support to allow you to switch between two Bluetooth headphones at once and a recessed pairing button in the case. They also support Bluetooth 5.3 for a stronger connection and can be charged with either USB-C or Qi wireless charging.
